Position Overview
We are hiring a Development Manager (Maternity Cover) to join our dynamic Development and Communications team. This role is part of a growing organization with a team of over 70 staff members across eight countries, united by a goal to positively impact 100 million African children by 2028. At Ubongo, you’ll find a mix of challenges, responsibilities, and fun, along with the chance to make a meaningful difference in millions of children’s lives.
The Development Manager will support our fundraising initiatives, working closely with the Director of Communications and Development. The focus will be on engaging with foundations, government grantmakers, family foundations, and individual donors globally. We’re looking for a skilled and creative fundraiser with a talent for storytelling and relationship-building, someone passionate about our mission and capable of finding and securing funding opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop Funding Applications
- Write and submit nine strong applications and proposals to raise $9 million in new funding and renewals.
- Contribute to securing $1.8 million in committed funds by June 2025.
- Strategic Fundraising Outreach
- Organize outreach efforts and meetings to enhance Ubongo’s participation at key events like the CIES and Skoll World Forum.
- Secure six strategic introductions or meetings with potential funders through targeted outreach by June 2025.
- Funder Communications
- Prepare and deliver four monthly and two quarterly updates on fundraising progress by June 2025.
- Draft detailed donor memos to support successful funder engagements.
- Funder Engagement and Events
- Assist the Grants Manager in organizing two impactful funder webinars by June 2025.
- Database and Documentation Management
- Maintain accurate records of all funding applications, communications, and transactions in Ubongo’s database.
Candidate Requirements
Essential:
- At least three years of experience in fundraising or grant writing for non-profits or social enterprises.
- Strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills, with proven grant-writing and storytelling abilities.
- Experience in outreach or network-building roles.
- Ability to synthesize research and create compelling literature reviews.
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as English, Creative Writing, Marketing, Communications, Nonprofit Management, or Business.
- Proven experience in fundraising, marketing, corporate communications, or project management.
- Passion for working with children.
- A proactive mindset with the ability to work independently and adapt to various tasks.
Preferred:
- Deep understanding of Africa’s education and development sectors.
- Enthusiastic about education, storytelling, and making a difference.
- Skilled at relationship-building and public representation of the Ubongo brand.
