About Us
Lay Volunteers International Association (LVIA) is an Italian non-governmental organization (NGO) operating across ten African countries, including Tanzania. With its headquarters in Cuneo, Italy, LVIA has maintained a presence in Tanzania for over 30 years. Our local office is based in Kongwa District, Dodoma Region (P.O. Box 160, Kongwa). We focus on community development initiatives in agriculture, health, and improving access to safe water and sanitation.
The Project
We are seeking an Accountant for the EU-funded project, “Kijani Pemba – Strengthening Urban Eco-Resilience in Chake Chake and Mkoani.”
The project’s goal is to foster sustainable and inclusive growth in South Pemba’s Chake Chake and Mkoani regions. This will involve increasing urban climate resilience and improving access to essential services, economic opportunities, and decision-making processes, particularly for women and youth in underserved communities.
Key project outcomes include:
- Strengthened collaboration between Local Authorities, communities, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) for participatory urban planning.
- Improved access to safe water and sanitation facilities, focusing on meeting the needs of women and girls.
- Enhanced socio-economic opportunities and empowerment for youth, women, and girls through sustainable waste management and green business development.
Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the Project Coordinator and Country Representative, the Accountant will manage the following tasks:
Core Duties:
- Oversee financial management and reporting for the project in collaboration with the Project Coordinator and under the supervision of the Country Administrator (Dodoma and Italy).
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, adhering to LVIA guidelines and procedures.
- Ensure timely payment of taxes, insurance, and tracking of staff leave.
- Process monthly payroll for LVIA staff.
- Review and manage accounting documents, process bank transfers, oversee tenders, procurements, and on-site purchases.
- Perform daily accounting tasks such as data entry, bank reconciliations, and balance checks.
- Update LVIA’s accounting software and verify monthly cash and bank balances.
- Review financial documentation from partner organizations for compliance and eligibility.
- Prepare required documentation for external audits.
Required Skills:
- High attention to detail with strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Excellent communication, report-writing, and computer proficiency.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Problem-solving abilities and sensitivity to gender equality.
Qualifications and Requirements
Essential:
- A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, with CPA certification.
- At least three years of relevant professional experience, including supervisory roles.
- Previous work experience with international NGOs and donor-funded projects.
- Strong budgeting, data analysis, and financial reporting skills.
- Familiarity with EU project implementation and PRAG 2021 guidelines.
- Knowledge of Tanzanian laws and regulations.
- Proficiency in English and Kiswahili, with experience writing official reports.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and general computer literacy.
Preferred:
- Relevant certifications or training.
- Familiarity with various accounting tools (e.g., NPS).
- A valid motorcycle riding permit.

Flexibility and adaptability are required to accommodate evolving duties and integrate your work with LVIA’s broader initiatives in Tanzania.
